Best tacos in Austin

Looking for the best tacos in Austin by yourself would take a lifetime. There are tons of good taco spots, and lots of great taco spots, but the best are truly hard to come by. Luckily, you don’t have to quit your job, fly to Austin, and dedicate your life to finding them. We’ve done the hard work for you (okay, so eating tacos isn’t hard work) so you can narrow your sights and map out your attack plan. Austinites, if you feel we missed any hidden gems, let us know!

Pueblo Viejo

With five locations throughout Austin (including a food truck), Pueblo Viejo ain’t hard to find. Pueblo Viejo serves up an impressive variety of both authentic and unique Mexican flavors. From savory breakfast tacos with fluffy, soft eggs to the fan favorite “Taco Nes”, Pueblo Viejo has something to hit the spot morning, noon, and night.

Radio Coffee - Veracruz Al Natural Taco Truck

Sisters Reyna and Maritza Vazquez immigrated to the U.S. and started their own taco truck in 2008. They both worked full-time jobs while taking turns sleeping on the floor of their truck to make ends meet. Since then, they’ve expanded to over five trucks and multiple locations citywide. If you think their story is amazing, you should try their tacos! Veracruz Al Natural trucks serve up authentic Mexican food, smoothies, and fresh juices that rank them at the top each Austinite’s list every year.

Asador

This low-key taco joint is hidden in the back of a bar, Seven Grand. Many first-time customers just stumble up on it due to the covert location, but always come back for more. Favorites include quesadillas, juicy brisket tacos, and barbacoa, all in a slightly crispy homemade tortilla. If it wasn’t so hard to find, it’d be slammed nonstop.

Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ

The perfect mix of Texas BBQ and tacos you won’t find anywhere else. There will almost certainly be a wait, and it will always be worth it. Just one look at these BBQ brisket tacos and your mouth will be watering until you get your hands on one. All the meat comes from a local Texas farm and is smoked for hours to perfection.

El Primo

Don’t let this modest taco stand’s size fool you, the taste is enormous. If you’re looking for down-home melty style tacos, El Primo is your pick. You can also switch it up with the “Super Torta” filled with three types of meat and topped with cilantro, onions, avocado, mayo, beans, and cheese. Reviews rave over the migas taco, barbacoa, and legua. Heads up–it’s cash only.

Honorable mention: Trill Taqueria

Vegetarian tacos can be a gamble, but they’re sure-bet at Trill Taqueria. The menu changes weekly as it depends on whatever the chef can get from local farms. Past reviews rave about hand-made masa and tortillas and a savory southern pecan mole used to top shiitake mushrooms and tasty fava beans.
