Things to Do in Dallas

Dallas is the land of big hats, big glitz, and big business deals. But there’s a lot more to Dallas than corporate workshops and oversized accessories. A vibrant live music scene, unique neighborhoods, colorful, sun-drenched parks, and the local Tex-Mex cuisine all make for a great trip to “The Big D”. While indulging in the southern cuisine, you can soak in the southern hospitality, and say ‘y’all’ any chance you get. Here are some of the best restaurants, things to do, and local faves that get a “Dallas star” from Avail.

Fair Park

Spend a day sauntering around Fair Park and the surrounding neighborhood. Fair Park has been a hotspot going all the way back to 1867, when the state first designated downtown Dallas as the location for the first Texas State Fair. Since then, the historic park has seen speeches from Presidents and Civil Rights Leaders, performances from Elvis, and countless iconic Cotton Bowl matchups.  Stroll through the Texas Discover Gardens, pet stingrays at the Children’s Aquarium (different than the Dallas World Aquarium), or gaze at the extensive collection of folk art, black renaissance paintings, historical materials, and art at the African American Museum.

Lower Greenville

Foodies, aspiring influencers, and casual travelers alike will all love Dallas’ budding Lower Greenville neighborhood. This section of Greenville Avenue is one of Dallas’ most authentic hubs for good eats, laid-back nightlife, Instagrammable lattes, and quirky southern shops. Looking to expand your tastebuds? Try Rapscallion, Gung Ho, or the paleo-inspired HG SPLY. Then cool off with a refreshing artisan popsicle at Steel City Pops.

La Duni

Indulge in scrumptious Latin-inspired cakes, pastries, and comfort food at La Duni. This café and bistro serves lunch, dinner, as well as a stellar weekend breakfast/brunch. Fan favorites include the Quattro Leches Cake and the Huevos Rancheros. There are a few locations, but the ‘main restaurant’ is located in the vibrantKnox/Henderson neighborhood on McKinney Ave.

Dealey Plaza

History buffs won’t want to miss this museum dedicated to the life, times, and assassination of John F. Kennedy. This independently-funded museum includes the building where the shot was made and overlooks Dealey Plaza, the site of the presidential motorcade. Thousands come to “The Grassy Knoll” every year to visit and pay homage to this profoundly important but macabre piece of American history.

Deep Ellum

Music lovers will definitely enjoy this hub for Texas blues and jazz music. Filled with unique art and photo-stop murals, Deep Ellum is one of Dallas’ most vibrant and unique neighborhoods. For savory smoked brisket and those classic BBQ sides, check out Pecan Lodge. One of the most unique eateries in Dallas, ‘Get Fried’, is dedicated solely to French fries. Not all the best restaurants are in this area, but all the spots in Deep Ellum are among the best in Dallas. Once you’re stuffed, swing by Deep Ellum Denim to shop authentic, hand-crafted denim clothing you can’t find anywhere else.
